Subject Currency: How I keep up to date with my specialist subject area

Standard

I keep up to date with developments in my specialist subject area of engineering/design and technology by being a member of the Institution of Engineering Designers.

The Institution of Engineering Designers is the only organisation in the UK to represent those working in the many fields of engineering (and product) design. The IED is also licensed by the Engineering Council to assess candidates wishing to join the EC’s Register of Professional Engineers and Technicians.

I have also joined a number of design technology and engineering forums on social media such Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook, and Instagram to keep up to date on various matters within the subject and more importantly to contribute and collaborate with other teachers within my specialist subject area.

In addition I set up a Professional Teaching Blog in order to record my teaching and learning journey and to share my teaching resources and ideas about teaching design technology and engineering.

As part of my continuing professional development, I am going to apply for the Incorporated Engineer status with the Engineering Council through the Institution of Engineering Designers. In addition I frequently attended seminars and exhibitions provided by my professional bodies; Society for Education and Training; and the Institution of Engineering Designers.
