I have a first class degree in pure mathematics. (As I write this I realise that, as a part time teacher in a state school, I am probably one of the lowest paid people in the country with that qualification, worth bearing in mind next time you hear conspiracy theories suggesting the re-emergence of traditionalism in education has been prompted by people attempting to make money out of education.) I have always found my mathematical knowledge and skills an advantage to me in my teaching. Not just when teaching A-level classes, but even when teaching bottom sets it helps to be quick enough to invent my own examples, and to have a good understanding of the importance and structure of mathematics.
